Muriel Stitt was a major contributor to the governance of Unit 470. Her contributions were wide ranging. We happened to work with her quite extensively in the teaching programs. So, we shall make a few comments in that area.
Muriel simply had a hand in every teaching program of the Unit. Often, she chose to remain as a background organizer and planner, never intrusive yet her contribution was simply indispensable. Among the many activities of hers we would like to mention two. She was one
of few major contributors that made the teaching program unique for the Hawaii Regional tournament year after year. They were free and well attended. She was the organizer of the weekly lecture series (including free lunch) before every Sunday game. Seemingly not trying very hard, she was able to generate the enthusiasm among a group of lecturers (including the two of us) who willingly volunteered their service (well, perhaps working for the compensation
of one free play). The listeners followed every lecture; attendance maintained at the high numbers of 30+. Later she even “promoted” me (Bob) to the spot of filling in whenever there is a gap. Her trust was much appreciated.
No doubt we will miss Muriel. Particularly, her role as an organizer of the Unit teaching programs will be difficult to fill.
